How much is your comfort zone costing you?

What is so comfortable about the comfort zone?

Your comfort zone can be comfortable but are you happy? It might feel safe but does it feel liberating?

What have you been avoiding in life to stay comfy within your walls? When you close yourself in your Comfort zone you end up missing out on experiences, lessons and successes. We are all craving to learn and grow, we are all meant to grow and our brains and bodies crave for it. New learnings carve new neural pathways.

Growth starts when you start changing things around. Making mistakes is imperative, that is one way of learning. Making the same mistake over and over again is what makes us stay in our comfort zone and "fail".

Growth is trying new things to improve our situation, changing our perspective on how we see our problem.

In NLP we discuss meta positions and this is one of the way this helps. A quick exercise to get you moving

When was the last time you walked that extra mile, pulled that extra weight at your fitness centre? How did that taste like? How did that success make you feel? It's a sense of achievement, an adrenaline rush.

The grass is always greener on the side where it gets watered.

1. Comfort Zone is a Habit

So change the habit and start watering other pastures. It's worth installing new habits in your life. It's not necessarily that you have to wake up at 5am to go for a morning jog and clear your mind. It could be writing a few lines on a journal. It could be taking an online course to better your situation at work.

It has to be a conscious effort from your side to push yourself, to motivate yourself. The beginning is always difficult, but then what comes easy first time round? (yep, a decadent piece of chocolate)

2. Be Prepared

When it comes to moving away from your comfort zone, you have to be prepared. Make a list, make another list, gather all information you can and do your research. Talk to others who have been in your situation or who have experience in what you want to explore and then direct your own film! When you're prepared you're less likely to be disappointed.

3. Reprogramme your thoughts

Sometimes though changing your habits and preparation are still not enough to get you moving. This is where NLP comes in. Through NLP we reframe those pesky thoughts and install new 'do' thoughts. We start with little manageable steps which turn into mini successes. The more you 'practice' the easier it gets.

4. Methods I use

If you have little children like me, (and this is me cheating!) I promise them "Mummy will be doing this today" and they will ask me at the end of the day if I've done it or not. I do not like to promise them anything I can't keep so if I promise I'll do something with them, I know I have to kick my behind and get it done. With this in mind, I started holding myself accountable, it is part of my own self-care programme. Whenever I feel the urge to zone out to escape my promises and hide in my comfort zone I get up and prepare a cup of tea. It's a constant conscious decision. "Is this what I want to do? Is this who I want to become?"

'Feel the fear and do it anyway' so do yourself a favour and keep moving.
